Silent Movement - Our gap year travelling the inland waterways

Thursday 1 December 2011

Spaghetti Junction

We made an early start again this morning as we had 22 locks ahead of us to get down into Brimingham. We passed a few BCN lock houses, this one least altered at the bottom of the Perry Barr locks, just before we reached spaghetti junction.
A lot of the lock paddles have the BCN initials on them.
Along one of the cuttings we came through today these towering bridges spanned the canal.
Chimney Bridge & Scott Bridge

Coming down the Perry Barr locks, with bright sunshine again.
Working locks keeps you warm, steering gets a bit chilly.  So definitely a day to take turns.

At the bottom of Perry Barr, Spaghetti Junction is ahead.

The original canal bridge looks rather small in comparison to the motorway flyovers.
The canal weaves its way through the concrete pillars in a kind of secret world of its own underneath the rushing 21st century traffic.

As we emerged from under the concrete jungle we turned onto the Birmingham & Fazeley canal and are now moored at Cuckoo Wharf, Aston.
8 miles, 22 locks

  1. We drove over here a couple of weeks ago, taking Ben to the Redpoint Climbing Wall in Birmingham. I always notice the canal as I negotiate the sweeping bend onto the Aston Expressway. It does look a lot more peaceful down there!
